Grey area drinking: when it's not a problem, but…
"Grey area drinking" describes the wide space between drinking without a second thought and a diagnosed alcohol problem. Many ambitious, capable women live there. Nothing has gone badly wrong — and yet alcohol quietly takes up more energy, time and head space than they want to give it.
Does this sound familiar?
- You tell yourself it isn't really a problem — but you think about it more than you'd like.
- The glass of wine at 7pm feels like the only moment of the day that is just for you.
- On paper you're doing everything right: career, family, friends. Yet mornings feel foggy.
- You've made rules — only weekends, only three — and keep quietly renegotiating them.
- You replay conversations at 3am and wonder what you said.
- You'd like to cut down, but you don't identify with the word 'alcoholic' or with rock bottom.
Why high achievers end up here
When you hold a lot together, wine can become the quickest way to switch off, to reward yourself, or to feel like the day is finally yours. It works — until it doesn't. The good news is that you don't need a label or a crisis to decide you'd like a different relationship with alcohol. Curiosity is enough.
